Adam and Eve lived in the glory of a perfect world, but their sin brought ruin to the earth. In figurative language, we could say that they rolled down into a deep well of darkness, where we’re all currently stuck. We’ve all been born in this well, grown-up, reproduced, aged, become diseased, died, and been buried, many times without hope. “But thanks be to God, who began a rescue plan as soon as the first couple sinned, because “Before the foundations of the earth were laid, the Father and the Son had united in a covenant to redeem man if he should be overcome by Satan” (The Desire of Ages, 834).
